Alice Rae Garcia, age 79, of Detroit, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Beloved mother of the late Rudolph Garcia III, John Garcia, and Jo-Ann Santillana. Dearest sister of William Barnette, the late Linda Byrd, the late Wanda Miller, and Lemoine Sullivan. Proud grandmother of Veronica Santillana (Romeo Acevedo), Santiago Santillana, Samantha Santillana, Maria Santillana (fiancé Adrian Martinez), and adopted granddaughter Merzaya Garza. Loving great-grandmother of Leilani Santillana. Alice will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will also be fondly remembered by her many friends, especially her best friends Kathy Magaluk and Joan Bauer. Preceded in death by her parents Erlin & Ruby Barnette.
Alice had a genuinely sweet, caring soul. Her beautiful smile would light up any room she was in and people loved to be in her company. She enjoyed talking about a variety of topics and could have a conversation with anyone. The blue ocean was used to describe her stunning blue eyes by the people who knew her best. Alice was also a great mom and she loved her family immensely.
Her working years were spent working with her patients at Henry Ford Hospital as a dietician.
She was witty, quirky, smart, and articulate. This is probably why she enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing the game Scrabble. Alice was also funny and had a playful spirit. This would shine through the way she would sit and swing her feet back and forth or the jokes she told regularly. It was not unheard of that some practical jokes were played on the people she loved.
Alice adored reading. During the Spring or Fall you would often find her sitting on the porch, with a warm cup of coffee, enjoying the changing colors and reading a good book. She loved all books, but she really loved the murder mystery genre, especially the novels by James Patterson.
Life was not without hardship though, Alice beat cancer multiple times. She was a fighter and a survivor of breast cancer, as well as kidney and skin cancer. Alice was strong, vibrant and loved life until her last moments.
The immediate family of Alice will be gathering together for a private moment before her final disposition of cremation.
Memorial Visitation & Service to be announced at a later date.
