Carleen Kay Hull, age 74, of Houghton Lake Michigan, passed away on November 16, 2025. She was born on February 23, 1951, in Clare, Michigan.
Carleen is lovingly survived by her daughter, Christine Begeman (Mike); her grandchildren, Evan Begeman (Lauren), Drake Begeman (fiancée Corinne Pettry), and Chase Begeman; and her great-granddaughters, Hannah and Abby Billings.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Virginia Stephenson; her former husband, Robert Hull Sr.; her stepson, Robert Hull Jr.; and her brother, Dan Stephenson
Carleen’s journey began in Clare, Michigan, but her determination led her far beyond her hometown. As a young single mother, she set out in search of opportunity, ultimately building a life in the Detroit area. There, she began a long and successful career with Ford Motor Company in the security department. Through dedication and perseverance, she earned multiple advancements and concluded her career in logistics. While working full-time, Carleen remained deeply committed to her education. She attended night classes, earning her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and later her master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Never one to settle, she came within one dissertation of completing her Ph.D.
Outside of her professional life, Carleen had a deep and abiding love for animals. She became involved in the show dog world with her beloved cocker spaniel, Marge, and was known for her natural connection with animals. She volunteered with shelters and rescues, fostered many animals, and gave countless others a safe and loving home. She spent time helping at Horses’ Haven and even assisted with wildlife at The Ark. It was often said that if Carleen left home, she might return with a rescue in need. Her family fondly joked that her pets lived the very best lives, filled with exceptional care, good food, and endless love.
Carleen also had a passion for home renovation. She found joy in restoring properties and bringing new life to them, a passion that led her to live in several Michigan communities, including Madison Heights, Trenton, Southgate, Brownstown, Higgins Lake, and Houghton Lake—though Clare always remained close to her heart.
She embraced adventure and loved to travel, especially when shared with family and friends. Summers spent “up north” were filled with day trips and spontaneous outings. Her favorite places were along the shores of the Great Lakes, particularly Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Whether swimming along Route 2 or visiting Mackinac Island, these moments brought her peace and happiness.
Above all, Carleen cherished her family. Her grandsons and their families were the center of her world, and she spoke of them with immense pride. She especially treasured time spent with her great-granddaughters, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.
Carleen was also a woman of many talents and hobbies. She enjoyed quilting, photography, baking, and bedazzling, always taking pride in sharing her creations. She was a skilled marksman with a notable collection of firearms and shared this passion with “her boys,” who lovingly nicknamed her “Nanny Oakley.” Trips to the range were special adventures, where she delighted in teaching them target shooting, trap, and skeet. Fellow club members always enjoyed seeing her arrive with her boys, proudly showing them off.
Carleen’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved her. Yet her memory lives on through the laughter she inspired, the kindness she shared, and the lasting impact she made on family and friends. She lived fully, loved deeply, and gave selflessly. Her generous heart, strong spirit, and beautiful smile will be deeply missed.
As we grieve her loss, we also celebrate her life. May Carleen rest peacefully, surrounded by eternal love.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Solosy Funeral Home in Lincoln Park, Michigan.
