Clay was an avid sports fan. In high school, he was a dedicated baseball player and found success with his team. They were able to advance to the High School World Series one year, which was held in New York City. Throughout his adult years, Clay was a frequent bowler. He enjoyed being a part of bowling leagues as well as bowling with friends on a Friday night. He also loved throwing darts and would do so regularly when he met up with friends for a couple beers. Clay watched all different kinds of sports but he was particularly devoted to the Michigan Wolverines. He was a big fan of their football teams under the leadership of Bo Schembechler and loved being in the stands at The Big House as the sounds of Hail to the Victors rang through the air.
