David Lawrence Pack was born on September 27, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, the second son of Harvey Joseph Pack and Amelia G Pack. He attended public school in Lincoln Park, Michigan, and graduated with music performance degrees from Indiana University and the University of Oklahoma. David was an extraordinarily gifted tubist, having served as Principal Tuba of The Phoenix Symphony from 1973 until his retirement in 2021. During his tenure with the orchestra, David was the featured soloist on numerous occasions. As a founding member of the Phoenix Brass Quintet, David toured extensively with that ensemble over a twenty-year period. In addition to recording with the Phoenix Brass, David recorded with the St Louis Symphony, Leonard Slatkin, Music Director, The Phoenix Symphony under James Sedares and the National Symphony of Mexico under Eduardo Mata. In addition, David served as guest Principal Tuba in the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the San Salvador International Music Festival Orchestra and the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra among others.
An outstanding music educator, David was loved and admired by hundreds of students over the years.
David is survived by his daughters Piper Pack-Smith, Sadie Levinson and Hope Dehait, his dear brother Harvey, beloved cousins Joey Mosolits and Doreen Herk, and numerous grandchildren that totally lit up his life.
David is preceded in death by his parents as well as his treasured wife of 28 years, Helen, who passed away in January of this year.
Per David's wishes no services will be held and cremation to take place.
