Diego Melendez

December 30, 1952 — April 18, 2025

Dearborn Heights

Diego Melendez, age 72, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on December 30, 1952, to the late Diego Melendez and Ana Julia Ortega, Diego's life was rich with music, laughter, and deep devotion to family.

Diego was married to the love of his life, Sonya Melendez, for 41 wonderful years. Their marriage was built on love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was the dear father of four children who brought him immense pride: Diego (Jamie) Melendez, Sylvana (Johnny) Harris, Albert Melendez, and Jennifer Melendez. He was a devoted grandfather to Alexis, Johnny Jr., and Briseis, and he treasured every moment spent with them.

He is also survived by his loving siblings: Eddie (Amber) Melendez—his closest confidant and best friend—Richard (Lidia) Melendez, Albert (Annie) Melendez, Jorge Melendez, Millie Melendez, Migdalia Melendez, Carmen Delia (Chanty) Melendez, and Maritza (Rene) Zayas. Diego was cherished by his 27 nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Diego grew up in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, where he worked in his father's laundry business, George's Cleaners, from a young age. This early experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of responsibility that he carried with him throughout his life. He worked for many years at Argent Limited in Livonia, where his dedication and strong work ethic not only earned the respect of his colleagues but also provided a stable and supportive foundation for his family. Through his commitment, he ensured his loved ones were cared for and his home was filled with love and opportunity.

A gifted musician, Diego was best known for his talent and passion as a singer and percussionist. He was a proud founder and leader of Orchestra K'Che, a beloved Salsa band in which he performed for many years in the Metro Detroit Area. Diego brought joy to countless people through his music and was equally enthusiastic about Latin Jazz. His rhythm, voice, and energy were unmistakable and unforgettable.

Diego also had a deep love for Detroit sports, cheering faithfully for the Tigers, followed closely by the Pistons and the Lions. He was a man of simple pleasures—while he disliked tacos, he had an undeniable sweet tooth and a soft spot for treats, but his most favorite meal was the McDonald's McRib. His playful sense of humor, especially about food, made family gatherings even more memorable.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Solosy Funeral Home in Lincoln Park. Family and friends are invited to gather for a Memorial Service at 7:30 PM in remembrance, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable life of a man whose rhythm will forever echo in our hearts. Following the memorial service, his remains will be laid to rest at a family plot in Orocovis, Puerto Rico.

Diego's legacy lives on in his music, his family, and the joy he brought into the world. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated.
