Former Lincoln Park Fire Chief, Earnest E. Moon (Earne), age 75, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 from complications of kidney disease. He served the City of Lincoln Park from 1973 – 2003 with the fire department. He began his career as an entry level firefighter and retired as the Fire Chief.
"Earne" grew up in Lincoln Park, graduating in January 1968 from LPHS. He continued his education at Lawrence Institute of Technology. He was drafted in 1970 and served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1970 – 1972. Earne returned to Lincoln Park after his tour and began his Fire Department service in 1973. He would always strive to help the citizens of his home town. He helped to change Lincoln Park Days to be a revenue producer and the money raised went to needed charitable organizations. He was given a Distinguished Service Award for his computer work (programming, building) with students.
After retirement, Earne and his wife Debbie built their dream home on ten acres of waterfront property in Interlochen, near Traverse City. Earne enjoyed doing much of the inside work himself. He was an amazing craftsman and it showed. The outside work was also a joy to him in the summertime. Keeping the land looking good and healthy was important to him. He had a big orange Kubota tractor to help him maintain the land and to blow away the major snow which was normal to that location. He got rid of the snow for the neighbors as well and they enjoyed seeing the big guy out there in his baseball cap (LPFD) with a cigar in his mouth. He was always there to help anyone who needed it.
Sadly, Debbie passed away from cancer in 2012 after having been married to Earne for over 30 years. Earne had stayed in (minor) touch through the years with an old girlfriend, Kathy (Guyot) Crosley, who lived in Bullhead City, AZ. He knew that only 4 months earlier she had lost her husband Larry, to whom she had been married for over 20 years, to cancer. After visiting by phone for several months, Earne invited Kathy to come to Traverse City in the summer which is a beautiful time and place to be. After 40+ years apart they were able to catch up and realize they still had many things in common. So in late 2012 they married. They were able to enjoy his beautiful home for 9 years before he had health issues.
Earne was predeceased by his wife Debra Ann Moon, his parents, Ramon & Irene Moon, and his parents-in-law Harold & Annie Guyot.
He is survived by his wife Kathy, sons Jason (Melodee) and Jeffrey Moon, Christina Moon and 5 grandchildren Bryan, Leyla, Steven, Charlotte, and Bella. He also was blessed with a great-granddaughter Alysha. He is also survived by 1 brother, Michael Moon and 3 sisters, Sheila (Chuck) Mundy, Ann Newell, and Linda (Ed) Perry.
