Edith Irene Hampo

February 22, 1934 — March 23, 2023

Edith I. Hampo, 89, of Loveland, OH, formerly of Plymouth, MI, entered into eternal peace with the Lord on March 23, 2023.

Beloved wife of 47 years of the late Sandor Hampo. Loving and proud mother of Alexander (Diana) of Hot Springs, AR, Adrianne (Michael) Stella of Loveland, OH, and Richard (Tricia) of Ann Arbor, MI. Cherished grandmother of Jack, Mary, Alexis, Stephanie, Michael (Holly), Lindsay, Eliza, Sandor and Alexander, and great-grandmother of Lily.

Edith was born in Budapest, Hungary on February 22, 1934. She lived through the German Occupation as a child and bravely escaped her homeland in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. Through a note left by Sandor on a bulletin board at New Jersey's refugee camp, Camp Kilmer, Edith reunited with Sandor in Indiana. They married and settled in Michigan where they raised their family. Having come to America with virtually nothing and hardly speaking English, they instilled in their children values of hard work, determination, selflessness and gratitude.

Edith's greatest joy was her family, showering them with unconditional love and Hungarian delicacies. She loved hosting incredible parties for family and friends, complete with several course meals enjoyed at beautiful tables, and culminating with everyone singing Hungarian favorites at the piano late into the night.

She was "Nagymama" or "Nami" to her grandchildren, who will likely remember her for her classic catchphrases – "Holy Toledo" or "I'm going home," among many. She was incredibly proud of each of them. She will be forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Family and friends will be received from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary on Thursday, March 30, at Solosy Funeral Home, 3206 Fort St, Lincoln Park, MI. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 31, at Holy Cross Hungarian Church, 8423 South St, Detroit, MI.
