Elizabeth L Hughes, 76, of Alpena Michigan peacefully passed away near her seasonal home in New Port Richey, FL on Tuesday August 16, 2022. Elizabeth (Betty) was born on October 12, 1945, in Detroit to the late Joseph P and Elizabeth L (Chont) Csekei. Betty spent most of her childhood at her family's farm in Waltz, Michigan with her beloved grandparents and cousins.

Having graduated from Western Michigan University and started a master's at the University of Michigan she began teaching in the Detroit area. Eventually moving to Alpena with her first husband. She started teaching at Alpena High School, where she was known to her students as Mrs. Eby. She taught English, worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena, and led High School girls on several trips like to Washington D.C.

During her time at Alpena HS, she met Patrick Hughes. The two were married on May 29, 1981. Pat and Betty later moved to the Flushing area, where she continued her teaching career in the parochial schools, retiring in 2005.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, parent, and brother. She is survived by her daughters; Julia Hughes of Alpena, Christine (Dale) Leonard of Allegan. Grandsons Chase, and Patrick Leonard. Nephews Matt, John, and Jim.

There will be a visitation at Solosy Funeral Home on 9/1 from 10-12pm with a service at noon. Lunch immediately following around 1pm. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday 09/03 at St Augustine's Church in Hillman with a visitation preceding and a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers: donations can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena , or the American Cancer Society .
