Age 95. Kovacs, Evelyn Mary (née Cassidy), January 19, 2021. Beloved wife of the late Stephen Francis Kovacs. Dear mother of Carrie (Michael) Hier, Julia (James) Freeman, and Stephen (Patricia) Kovacs. Dearest grandmother of Nicole, Michelle, Kelly, Justin, Eric, Janie, and Joel.
Evelyn was born August 30th 1925. She was the youngest child and only daughter born to Carrie and Frederick Cassidy. Her four older brothers, Lawrence, Samuel, William, and Norman preceded her in death. A 1944 graduate of All Saints High School in Detroit, she worked in a downtown Detroit dime store to pay for school tuition. Upon graduation, she worked at Wolverine Trucking Company until she was hired by Western Union, where she worked for 14 years. Evelyn traveled the United States with her friends Vi, Lyla, and Mildred. Through another dear friend and co-worker, Betty Kovach Hajdu, she met Betty's brother, Stephen Francis Kovacs, and married him in 1958. She became a stay at home mom after welcoming Carrie, then Julia and finally Stephen into their family.
Evelyn bowled for a Western Union team while employed, and when her children were in high school, she joined two leagues at Belmar Lanes in Lincoln Park. Among her prized possessions were her First Place trophy, and her Last Place trophy. Stephen encouraged her to get involved in the community, and she did. She committed time and energy to the American Red Cross (30+ years), Daughters of Isabella Immaculate Heart Circle (Past Regent), Women of Good Shepherd (Past President), Lincoln Park Seniors, Good Shepherd Seniors, Council of Catholic Women, Wyandotte PLAV Post #7 Ladies Auxiliary (Past Chairman of the Board), and Western Union Retirees (Past President). She also served her church, Christ the Good Shepherd, in Lincoln Park, as Eucharistic Minister, also doing Altar Care and helping out with the school's hot lunch program. Some of her best times were spent at the Wyandotte Senior Friendship Club where she was on the Board of Directors and served as Chair of the dinner dance committee.
Fiercely independent, Evelyn drove her car until she was 90 years old. Her love of strawberry sundaes was legendary.
Evelyn felt every day was a gift and that we should do whatever we can to make the world a better place.
