Gayle Ann Hernandez

Gayle Ann Hernandez, age 74, of Southgate, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, surrounded by her three sons and loved ones.

Gayle was born on July 17, 1951, in Lincoln Park, Michigan, to the late William and Verla Wells. She grew up near her family church, walking to services several times each week with her mother and siblings. Alongside her sister, she often sang for their congregation, earning them the affectionate title "The Wells Sisters." As a young girl, Gayle also loved playing basketball and bowling.

After graduating from Lincoln Park High School in 1969, Gayle married her husband of 56 years, Joe Hernandez, on December 6, 1969. Together they welcomed three sons, who became her entire world. Gayle was immensely proud of her boys and shared her deep love for Joe Jr., Brian, and Shaun with everyone she met. Hearing that she was the best mom or that her sons grew into great men filled her heart to overflowing; she called it the greatest compliment she could ever receive. Her sons absolutely adored her and cherished her high position in their lives.

While raising her family and remaining a supportive wife to her veteran husband, Gayle worked at Montgomery Ward and later in the banking industry. Her strong work ethic, warm demeanor, and kind spirit made her a customer favorite. As the years passed, Gayle discovered her next favorite role: being a grandmother. With each new grandchild, her heart grew. Cordell, Payton, Hayden, Zander, Ella, Taryn, Tiana, and Oliver brought her pure, unadulterated joy.

Gayle kept a full calendar doing what she loved with family and friends. Church services, lunch dates, concerts, plays, comedy shows, movies, and water aerobics were all made special by the people sharing them with her. She was blessed with many deep friendships, including a 53-year bond with her best friend, Sue Galloway. A phone call with Gayle always included updates on porch time with Ivonne, her various friend groups, or movie nights with Donna and Casey.

Generous with her talents, Gayle crocheted countless blankets and towels just to brighten someone's day—surprising loved ones when they least expected it. When her sons were young adults, her backyard became an oasis for large gatherings. She and Joe loved hosting big BBQs with a "the more the merrier" outlook. Gayle loved the pool, especially when it was full of her children and grandchildren. She was also famous for cooking massive meals, regularly portioning out and delivering extra food to friends and family just to share the love.

Gayle is survived by her husband, Joe; her children, Joe Jr., Brian (Becky), and Shaun (Sunshine); her grandchildren, Cordell (Kennedy), Payton, Hayden (Abbie), Zander, Ella, Taryn, and Tiana; her siblings, Ron (Joan) Johnston, Carol (Gary) Nickoloff, and Bill (Joann) Wells; and her sister-in-law, Margie Wells.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Wells and Verla (Jack) Hamaker; her daughter-in-law, Kelly Hernandez; her grandson, Oliver Hernandez; her sister, Patty Johnston; and her brother, Gary Wells.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 26th at 3 p.m. at the Gateway Church of Christ, 14950 Northline Rd., Southgate, MI 48195. Visitation with the family begins at 1:30 p.m. Attendees are warmly invited to stay for desserts following the 3 p.m. service
