It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria Ann Butchart, who left us on July 6, 2024, at the age of 89. Gloria was born on January 12, 1935, in Detroit, MI, to the late Victor and Pearl Piovesan.
She was the beloved wife of the late William G. Butchart, whom she fondly referred to as her "dream guy" after their first meeting. She was a radiant, June bride when they were married on June 16, 1956, and shared nearly 48 wonderful years together until his passing in 2004.
Gloria is survived by her loving children: William Edward (Heather) Butchart, Barbara Jeanne (William Todd) Cartrette. She is also survived by her beloved niece Denise (the late Gary) Groulx and nephew Mick (Linda) Bodrie whom she loved like her own. She was also the cherished older sister of the late Shirley (the late James) Bodrie.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Heather (Jack) Favazza, Edward (Tericia) McCracken, Katherine Cartrette, Meghann (Kegan Miller) Butchart, and Brandon Butchart; who affectionately called her "Campin' Gramma." Her great-grandchildren James, Kelsie Mae, Wesley, Eddie, Cameron, Jack Luca, and Vinnie lovingly knew her as Nona. Gloria is also survived by numerous friends and extended family members.
The old saying goes – if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Gloria had the opportunity to fill a unique position. She worked for the Detroit Tigers as Ernie Harwell's secretary. Working with a Detroit baseball legend was great, and it also afforded the chance to meet many of the team's greats, including Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, and Sparky Anderson. She loved her time with the Tigers and cherished the memories made during those years. Her dedication extended beyond her professional life; however, as she was a loving, attentive mother and a devout Catholic, actively serving her family and church for decades.
Bill and Gloria loved the outdoors. They treasured their time boating and being members of the Seaway Boat Club. Gloria had a passion for snowmobiling and camping, and together with Bill, enjoyed many years at their cherished chalet near Rose Lake. She loved playing cards, especially Rummy, and shared many joyful outings with her girlfriends, particularly enjoying trips to see the fall colors. Her sweet tooth was legendary, with favorites like peanut buster parfaits, bumpy cakes, and Hershey's chocolate bars.
Immensely proud of her Italian heritage, Gloria was renowned for her lasagna, often hailed as the best ever, and her Chicken and Rice dish was a family favorite.
Gloria's warmth, love, and dedication to her family, friends, and faith will be deeply missed. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
