Hazen Melvin Dickerson

Hazen Melvin "Mel" Dickerson, age 84, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026. Born on June 20, 1942, Hazen Melvin was the beloved son of the late John Hillyard Dickerson and Ethel Elizabeth (Bragenzer) Dickerson. A lifelong resident of the Downriver area, Mel grew up in Lincoln Park, where he attended Lincoln Park schools and formed the strong work ethic and determination that would define his life.

For more than 60 years, Mel shared a devoted and loving marriage with his beloved wife, the late Patricia Dickerson. Together they built a life centered around one another, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to their family. Through every season of life, they stood side by side, creating a legacy of love that will continue through generations.

Mel was the proud and loving father of Deborah (Brian) Block, Michael (Irene) Dickerson, and Ethel (Steve) Kabara. Nothing brought him greater satisfaction than seeing his family grow. He was a grandfather to Christina, Matthew, Christeen, Angela, Heather, Michael, Michael, Dustin, Destiny, Katelyn, and Emily, and a great-grandfather to Melody, Thomas, Ereina, Keonya, Javon, Jaxen, Ariana, Kloie, Brooklyn, and Lillian.

A hardworking man in every sense of the word, Mel spent his entire life building, fixing, and creating. As an entrepreneur, he took great pride in working for himself, using his mechanical talents to repair and maintain machinery for a wide variety of companies. His natural ability to understand how things worked and his skill with his hands earned him the respect of those who knew him. Never one to shy away from hard work, he also owned and operated a successful janitorial company, demonstrating the determination, independence, and perseverance that became hallmarks of his character. Mel was known for being naturally handy and could seemingly fix just about anything. Whether it was repairing a machine, solving a difficult problem, or lending a helping hand, he enjoyed putting his talents to good use.

When he wasn't working, Mel treasured time spent with family. He especially enjoyed his trips to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, where he embraced the fun and excitement of family moments. He also found great joy in the places he called home throughout his life. He cherished the seven years he spent living in California and the seven years he spent in Florida, embracing the sunshine, slower pace, and coastal lifestyle each offered. Whether on the West Coast or along the Gulf and Atlantic shores, he was happiest near the water, finding peace in the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sun, and the simple beauty of a day at the beach.

Mel's legacy is one of perseverance, dedication, and unconditional love. He believed that providing for his family was life's greatest responsibility, and he fulfilled that role with quiet strength, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. His example of hard work, self-reliance, and generosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Though his presence will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
