With deep love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Helen Mary Demou (née Tesin), who passed away on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the age of 90.
Helen was born on February 25, 1935, in Akron, Ohio, to Charles Tesin and Mildred Tesin (née Miskovitch). She later moved with her family to Detroit, Michigan, settling on Liebold Street, where her roots would deepen and flourish. She attended Boynton School and proudly graduated from Southwestern High School in 1953.
Of Serbian heritage, Helen was baptized into the Serbian Orthodox faith, which remained a foundation of strength and identity throughout her life. She married John George Demou, of Rock Island, Illinois, in 1964, and together they shared a devoted marriage until his passing in 1990.
A woman of quiet strength and unwavering dedication, Helen took great pride in caring for her home and working hard throughout her life. She was a loving and loyal mother to her only son, George Demou, and treasured her daughter-in-law, Lisa, as her own. Helen's heart overflowed with pride and joy for her grandchildren — Sera, Catherine, Caroline, and John — who brought her endless happiness and whom she adored deeply.
Helen is preceded in death by her beloved husband John, her parents Charles and Mildred, and her brothers Mike Tesin and Daniel Tesin (Madeline). She leaves behind a legacy of love among numerous nieces, nephews, and an extended circle of lifelong friends who were as close as family.
Helen had a true love for sports and could often be found cheering on her Detroit and Michigan home teams. She also had a soft spot for her favorite cowboy and mystery shows, finding comfort in familiar stories and strong characters. Around the dinner table, Helen enjoyed lively conversation — whether discussing current events or swapping stories from the past. Her wit, warmth, and wisdom made every gathering a cherished memory.
She will be remembered for her devotion to family, her no-nonsense humor, and her tender heart. Her love was steadfast, her faith strong, and her presence irreplaceable. Zivali, Baba, and Laku Noć.
