Detroit

The family of James W. Blaylock is saddened to announce his peaceful passing on April 21, 2026. Born on July 27, 1935, in Portageville, Missouri, James was the beloved son of the late James O. Blaylock and Audrey (Brock) Blaylock.

Growing up as the oldest of three brothers in southern Missouri, James shared a lifelong bond with his siblings, David and Donald. The early years picking cotton on the farm helped shape his strong work ethic and deep appreciation for family. He often spoke fondly of his childhood, especially the time spent with his cherished grandmother, “Maw,” whose love and guidance left a lasting impression on him.

James carried determination in the activities he enjoyed throughout his life. As a young man, he had a passion for activity and adventure—he enjoyed water skiing, roller skating, and dancing, always drawn to activity and fun. He also practiced karate as a young adult, an interest he took pride in. Later in life, he became a proud member of the Masonic brotherhood, valuing the sense of camaraderie and belonging it brought him.

A lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, James especially cherished the memories of the team’s 1984 World Series victory. He loved attending games, often sitting in the bleachers with his daughter MaDonna when she was young, creating moments that would be remembered for a lifetime. He also had a fondness for the simple pleasures—traveling to Florida, camping trips up north, visiting Mackinaw, and relaxing with a good cigar.

James was known for his vibrant personality. He was incredibly active well into his later years, with a stubborn streak that was matched only by his kind heart. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a way of making those around him smile. Above all, his greatest accomplishment was the full and meaningful life he lived, reaching the remarkable age of 90.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Blaylock; his brother, the late Donald Blaylock; and his faithful dog, Angel.

James is lovingly remembered by his daughter, MaDonna Price (Vince); his grandson, Vinnie Price (Jen); his brother, David Blaylock (Debbie); and many nieces and nephews, especially Donovan (Dawn) Blaylock. He also leaves behind dear friends Anna and Jerry, who were a special part of his life for many years.

James will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of strength, humor, and love for life will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
