James Melvin Jenkins, known to many as Jimmy and to Bernice as Jim, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, at the age of 87 at his Detroit home.
Born on September 2, 1938, Jim was the son of the late Melvin Martin Jenkins and Ressie Downey. He lived a life centered on simple joys and meaningful connections with those around him.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy, a chapter of his life that reflected his quiet strength and sense of duty.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his sisters, Ruby Koots, Martha Lynch, Judy Blair, and Faye Nichols; and his son, Bruce Jenkins.
Jim is survived by Bernice Tanner, who held a special place in his heart; his son, Martin Jenkins; his daughters, Barbara Henry and Betty McMinn; and his brothers, David Jenkins (Karen), Gerald Jenkins (Helen), and Ray Jenkins. He also leaves behind several grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom will carry forward his memory.
Jim found great happiness in boating and fishing, and he cherished the time he spent with family and friends. He had a gift for conversation and truly enjoyed connecting with others. His warm personality and great sense of humor made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Solosy Funeral Home in Lincoln Park. Military Honors will be rendered at 7:30 PM, followed by committal prayers.
Cremation will take place after the funeral and interment will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
Jim will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
