The family of Janet Louise Totsky, is saddened to announce her passing on July 10, 2025 at the age of 87.
Born on March 2, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Janet was the beloved daughter of the late Louis Simon and Mary (Risko) Simon. She grew up on the east side of Detroit alongside her two younger brothers, Louie (the late Loretta) Simon and Gerald (Linda) Simon, and attended East Commerce High School. It was during these formative years that Janet developed a strong sense of family and friendship, develop her eye for detail and organization, and an appreciation for the arts that would carry through her entire life.
Janet met the love of her life, Michael Andrew Totsky, at a local bowling alley—a fateful meeting that blossomed into a devoted marriage. Mike, a professional bowler for Stroh's, shared with Janet a passion for fun and good company. Together they raised two daughters, Paula (Paul) Bieniewicz and Lynn Totsky, whom Janet adored and supported wholeheartedly. Janet has found eternal peace alongside Mike; he entered into rest in 1990. Janet is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A dedicated professional, Janet retired from Honigman Miller Schwartz & Cohn as a legal secretary, where her work was marked by diligence and integrity. In her retirement, she continued to serve her community as a volunteer usher at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, a role that brought her joy as she was able to enjoy many outstanding performances. She attended some courses at U of M Dearborn as part of their retired persons studies program, and took pride in staying independent and continuing to drive. She completed the Free Press crossword puzzle every morning.
Janet was a woman of many talents and interests. She enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, traveling, and had a special talent for sewing—particularly needlepoint. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Tara and Leah Bieniewicz, and was their biggest fan at countless sporting events. Her support, and love were constants in their lives.
Janet cherished simple pleasures—lunches with friends, concerts at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and tending to her garden. She was a loving mother, devoted grandmother, caring sister, and loyal friend whose kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Her legacy is one of grace and strength. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
