Karen Lynn Proffitt, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on November 2, 2024. Born on August 23, 1959, to the late Jack and Leanore Proffitt, Karen was a vibrant spirit who left an unforgettable impression on everyone she met.
Karen is survived by her beloved children, Dori (Rob) Montroy-Decker, Katie (Eladio) Montroy-Nino, and Thomas Jr., who each inherited her fearless zest for life. Her cherished grandchildren, Alyshia, Jason, Kailey, Hailey, Oliver, and Rylee, as well as her great-grandchild, Kingson, were the lights of her life. Karen was also deeply loved by her sister, Laura, and will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved sister, Mary.
A self-proclaimed "wild child" in her youth, Karen was known for her free spirit, adventurous nature, and a heart that overflowed with laughter and love. She adored her dogs—especially her beloved Sophie—and wasn't shy about letting people know that her furry friends sometimes held a special place in her heart. Karen's love for music was as eclectic as she was, spanning artists from Kid Rock to Bob Seger to Alabama. She was most in her element at concerts, especially at Pine Knob, Comerica Park, ICA, Downtown Hoedown, and other festivals, singing along and living in the moment.
Karen was a free spirit who found her peace in life's simplest pleasures. She loved to unwind each day with her favorite pastime, smoking weed—it was her way of finding peace and relaxation. Karen had a deep love for sports, especially cheering on the Detroit Lions and Red Wings; win or lose, she was their loyal fan. Known for her strong will and stubborn streak, she was unapologetically herself and always meant well. Her vibrant personality and unique spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Karen had a need for speed and a fondness for fast cars in her younger days, though this changed quickly once her kids started driving. Known for her fearlessness, she loved shooting guns up north, taking long scenic drives, and fishing—activities that spoke to her love of the outdoors and the free, open spaces she cherished.
A true social butterfly, Karen had friends everywhere, always up for a laugh, a cigarette, and a cold Coke in hand. Her love for conversation knew no bounds, and her countless hours on the phone meant she was always in touch with the ones she cared about. Karen could be found catching up on her favorite shows, especially anything from the NBC *Chicago* franchise and The ID Channel.
Karen was tough as nails, fiercely independent, and incredibly devoted to her family. She adored her grandchildren and made it a priority to be a constant presence in their lives. Her friends and family will remember her as "one of a kind"—funny, loyal, and a joy to be around. Karen's spirit and energy will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
