Larry Wayne Burgess, aged 80, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Larry was born on July 19, 1944, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late Samuel and Audrey (Curtis) Burgess. As a boy, he moved to Dearborn Heights, Michigan, where he grew up, laying the foundation for a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
He was the beloved husband of Mary-Ann Buhl Burgess, with whom he shared 24 treasured years of marriage. Their love story began in 1997 at the Wyandotte Yacht Club, where they created countless memories together. Larry was the dear brother of Linda (the late Calvin) Austin and Pamela (Phil) Hotz.
Larry is survived by his children, Andrea (Brian) Cohen, Jeffrey Burgess, and Steven Burgess. He was also a grandfather to Seth and Nathan. Larry's extended family of friends included James (the late Gail) Kaufman, Richard and Cynthia Roth, Terry Rodriguez, Joseph Groat, and Todd Preuss, all of whom were deeply enriched by his companionship.
Larry served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army from 1962 to 1965. Stationed in Turkey, he worked as a Morse code interceptor, earning medals for his marksmanship and good conduct. His military service exemplified the integrity and discipline he brought to every aspect of his life.
Following his time in the Army, Larry embarked on a 35-year career at Ford Motor Company, where he became a Journeyman in the Tool and Die Department. He retired in 2001, having earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his unwavering work ethic and loyalty.
Larry's passions extended far beyond his profession. He was an avid boater, a former Fleet Captain, and a long-standing member of the Wyandotte Yacht Club, where he found camaraderie in water-based sporting. A skilled handyman, Larry took pride in working on his home and rebuilding classic cars, leaving behind tangible legacies of his craftsmanship. His softer side shone through his deep love for animals, which led him to volunteer at the Wyandotte Animal Shelter. He loved many pets over the years, including the late Corky, Cody, Toto, Kitty, and his surviving dog, Chad.
Larry will be remembered for his candor, sense of humor, and unwavering willingness to lend a hand. Above all, his greatest love was his family, whom he cherished with his whole heart. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Larry's life was a testament to love, service, and joy—a legacy that will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Larry's cremation has taken place in the care of Solosy Funeral Home.
