Mary Catherine "Cathy" Griffiths

December 1, 1946 — July 31, 2025

Mary Catherine Griffiths, affectionately known to many as Cathy, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, at the age of 78. A devoted woman of faith and compassionate, Cathy lived a life marked by service, love for family, and a steadfast commitment to doing the Lord's work.

Born December 1, 1946, to Helen Lohrstorfer (Pontius) née Shelton and William Lohrstorfer, Cathy was raised in a home rooted in kindness, generosity, and deep Christian faith. She was later lovingly embraced by her stepfather, the late Vernon Pontius. Cathy's nurturing spirit and joyful personality were shaped early on and carried throughout her life.

Cathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Griffiths. Their marriage was filled with cherished memories—especially summertime trips to Bob-Lo Island and the Detroit Zoo, which live on in the hearts of those who knew them. Together, they shared the joy and heartbreak of parenthood. Cathy was preceded in death by her sons, twins Hugh and John Griffiths, and Christopher Griffiths—each loss marking her heart but never shaking her faith.

Her commitment to service was most clearly seen in her involvement with the Assembly of God Church, where she joyfully volunteered in the infant and children's ministry. Her love for children was pure and ever-present, and she found great meaning in supporting families and caring for little ones during worship. Cathy also had a passion for travel, particularly exploring new places throughout Michigan. But most of all, she treasured time with her family—especially holiday gatherings filled with warmth, laughter, and tradition.

Known for her generous heart and welcoming nature, Cathy had a way of "just popping in" unexpectedly, bringing a smile and comfort wherever she went. She had a habit of mugging for the camera, never passing up the chance to share a silly face or candid grin. Her presence lit up the room, and her strong belief in kindness and compassion was evident in every aspect of her life.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, and her sisters: Judith (Tom) Wiancko, Susan (Archie) Romphf, and Bridget Smith. She was also preceded in death by her nephew Jeremy Pontius and niece Tina Sanchez—both of whom she shared a deep and special bond with.

She is survived by her loving siblings: David Lohrstorfer, Sylvia Stapleton, Rebecca (Mike) Huver, Chuck (Cindy) Pontius, Patricia (Philip Vickery) Pontius, Brian (Jo) Pontius, Laurie Reeves, Todd (Tina) Pontius, and Heather Pontius.

Cathy also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored her, with special mention of her niece Tammy (Pete) Rembis and their children Aaron and Brittney Jamie, her nephew Andrew Pontius, and nephew Eddie Sanchez and his children.

Though Cathy has gone to be with the Lord she so deeply loved, her memory lives on through those fortunate enough to know her. Her example of faith, her selfless giving, and her joyful spirit remain a guiding light to all who carry her in their hearts.

Cathy will be laid to rest at Ferndale Cemetery on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.
