Maureen Elaine Harney

May 14, 1947 — March 29, 2026

Lincoln Park

The world lost a truly remarkable soul on March 19, 2026, with the unexpected passing of Maureen Elaine Harney. Born on May 14, 1947, in Wyandotte, MI, Maureen was a beacon of kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family, community, and the causes she held dear. Her sudden departure, due to complications from an accidental fall, has left an indelible void in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Maureen was the beloved daughter of Frank and Virginia, who instilled in her the values of empathy, resilience, and service to others. She is predeceased by her cherished brother Kevin, and is survived by her loving sister Mary, and brothers Brian and Lance, the latter of whom she cared for with profound devotion throughout her life. And she would want to mention her cat Domino who misses her very much.

An alumna of Marygrove College, Maureen's career was as vibrant as her personality. She was the epitome of grace and poise, whether she was selling Mary Kay cosmetics—with her signature perfect red lipstick—or shaping young minds as a dedicated teacher in Montessori and Detroit Public Schools. Her passion for education and empowerment extended into her community work, where she volunteered tirelessly in political and charitable causes, and made a significant impact by ensuring many stray cats were spayed and neutered, demonstrating her enduring love for animals.

Maureen's commitment to her community was evident in her active involvement with the Michigan Democratic Party, where she worked to create positive change. She was a familiar face at Cabrini Parish's bake sales and a respected member of the Lincoln Park Library board. Her philanthropy was widespread, supporting numerous charities that advocated for animals, nature, and social and political causes.

In her personal life, Maureen found joy in simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, an enthusiastic baker, and a devoted caretaker of neighborhood cats. Her fascination with the British Royals provided her with countless hours of enjoyment, as did her favorite television shows, which offered a welcome respite from her busy life. She was an avid reader. And books were partners in her daily grind.

Maureen was a woman who never hesitated to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her ability to be there "in a pinch" was legendary among friends. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she freely offered her time, energy, and love to anyone in need, embodying the true spirit of selflessness.

Maureen's life will be honored in a small memorial ceremony, allowing her family and close friends to reflect on the profound impact she had on their lives. Although she has left this world, the legacy of her kindness and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Maureen’s life was a testament to the power of compassion and the extraordinary difference one person can make. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. Rest in peace, dear Maureen, knowing that your life was a blessing and your memory a treasure.
