It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rodney James Strobel, a devoted family man and nature lover, who passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, at the age of 84. Rodney was born on November 9, 1940, in Rogers City, Michigan, to the late Leonard and Helen (Loomis) Strobel. Raised in Lincoln Park, Michigan, Rodney's heart was forever tied to the great outdoors and cherished memories of summers spent on his family's farm in Millersburg, where he found joy in the farm life, fresh air, and endless adventures in nature.
Rodney was a dear brother to Teal (the late Pat) Strobel and was predeceased by his siblings, Gary (Sharon) Strobel and Paul (Jan) Strobel. His family bonds extended through his loving marriage to his beloved late wife, Barbara (Harrison) Strobel. They met at a party, fell in love, and married in March of 1962, embarking on a beautiful 55-year journey together. Rodney was a dedicated father to his three daughters, Cheryll (Curt) Wezner, Bobbi (Kevin) Parent, and Lori (Mike) Thomas. He was also a proud grandfather to Mike (Cristy) Mamaty, Sydney (Matt McKenzie) Thomas, Nicole Thomas, and Kara (Ethan) Oates, and a great-grandfather to little Josiah, each one bringing immense pride and happiness to his life.
An adventurer at heart, Rodney had a profound love for travel, especially trips that brought him closer to nature. He and Barbara shared many outdoor adventures, including a cherished trip to Yellowstone National Park and family camping trips, which became cherished traditions. In 2023, he fulfilled a lifelong dream with a trip to Alaska, reveling in the vast, untouched wilderness that exemplified the nature he so adored. When home in Michigan, Rodney could be found outside, fishing on his boat, walking the northern woods, or simply appreciating the beauty around him.
Known for his gentle and quiet nature, Rodney was a man who spoke with purpose. If he had a strong feeling about something, he'd say, "I don't know about that," making his dissent known in his own unique way. He was a listener, a man of few complaints, resilient, and adventurous. Rodney delighted in sharing stories of his life, and as he grew older, he became even more willing to share memories and wisdom with family and friends, who cherished each tale.
A dedicated car enthusiast, Rodney worked at Ford Motor Company for over 30 years, contributing to the cars he loved. Whether on the assembly line or tinkering with his own cars at home, Rodney's passion for automobiles was evident. He enjoyed car shows, had a collection of die-cast cars, and was happiest when talking about old and new models alike.
Rodney's legacy of kindness, resilience, curiosity, and love for family and friends lives on in the hearts of those he left behind. His stories, laughter, and warmth will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In his memory, we invite friends and family to continue to explore the great outdoors, treasure life's simple pleasures, and share a story or two, just as Rodney would have loved.
A private cremation will take place in the care of Solosy Funeral Home.
