Rudy Mendez, born April 8, 1953, passed away at the age of 73 on April 28, 2026, at the University of Michigan—University Hospital. Rudy walked life’s path as a friend to all, with humility, grace, and unwavering resilience. He found profound joy in living—his passion was his people—and he walked a faithful path, gently influencing all around him to trust in goodness and to appreciate the beauty of the “ride.” He recently faced a courageous battle with leukemia, a journey he carried with such quiet strength that one would hardly have known. He remained steadfast and valiant throughout.

Rudy was born in the spring of 1953 to Rafael and Lilian Mendez, the children of young immigrants who had come to the United States from central Mexico. Together they built a loving, home for their three sons— A home rich with warmth, story, and shared tradition. Rudy, the middle of Victor and Kenneth, was shaped by a family rooted in dedication. His father was a proud Ford worker, and his mother, Lilian, a talented beautician whose creativity and care left a lasting impression.

A genuine and compassionate soul, Rudy moved through life as a friend to all. He flourished as a salesman in the roofing industry, and pursued his craft for 25 years with Kearns Brothers, where he was embraced like family. Rudy’s passion from young adulthood was coaching and football—He brought devotion and mentorship, and a spirited love of competition to every field he stepped onto.

Rudy found peace in music and playing the guitar. He carried a deep appreciation for adventure, frequently reminiscing about his formative days backpacking through Europe. Rudy had an art for telling his stories while uplifting those who were fond to listen. He possessed an artistic sensibility, seeing beauty in the world around him—especially in the tranquility of our lakes and forests “Upnorth” in Michigan.

His cottage on Ausable Lake became a place of refuge and inspiration, a serene and picturesque retreat where he could roam and boat and bonfire with his loved ones. Rudy infused the space with his own distinctive, personal touches, creating a warm and welcoming haven where laughter echoed, stories were shared, and memories were made. There, alongside his wife Janis and their loyal pup Diesel, he embraced life’s simple, meaningful pleasures with family and friends.

Rudy faced life’s hurdles with a remarkable sense of optimism, always wearing his signature smile. It was said—lovingly—that Rudy operated on his own “Rudy time,” arriving just a bit late but always worth the wait. And once given a microphone, he might hold onto it a little longer than expected, not out of ego, but because he genuinely loved connecting, storytelling, and being in the presence of others.

He will be remembered as a warm-hearted, generous, and resilient man whose smile never faded—rooted in his enduring faith in the Lord and his deep gratitude for each day’s blessings, and spirit to tackle what tomorrow might bring.

Rudy is cherished by his loving wife, Janis Mendez, Rudy met Janis during their years in Catholic grade school at Christ the Good Shepherd, where a shared childhood and faith-filled foundation quietly began a lifelong bond that would grow into love. Janis and Rudy were married for 42 years. A beloved father and grandfather, he is survived by his daughter, Raechel; his son, Ryan; his son-in-law, Mark; and his cherished grandchildren, Emory, Lexton & twins Aubrey and Lauchlin. He will be profoundly missed and forever adored by all who knew and loved him.
