Virgil Barnell Hodge Jr.

September 27, 1982 — February 26, 2026

Lincoln Park

The family of Virgil Barnell Hodge Jr. is saddened to announce his sudden passing on February 26, 2026 at the age of 43. Born on September 27, 1982, Virgil was a creative spirit whose music, humor, and generous heart left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.

Virgil was born to Carmen Lebron and Virgil Barnell Hodge. Growing up in Lincoln Park, he shared an especially close bond with his older sister, Tania Salling. While their mother worked hard to provide for the family, Tania lovingly stepped into the role of protector, guide, and constant companion. Their connection remained strong throughout their lives, and they always carried that deep sibling bond with them.

From a young age, music captured Virgil’s heart. When an uncle gifted him an acoustic guitar, it sparked a passion that would follow him for the rest of his life. Creative and expressive, Virgil spent countless hours playing, writing, and experimenting with music. He attended Good Shepherd Elementary School and later Lincoln Park High School, where his personality and artistic energy became part of who he was known to be.

Although Virgil enjoyed a wide variety of music, as an adult, Virgil found his sound in the punk rock genre. He played in a band called Peter Green Sleeves, where he earned the nickname “Green Sleeves” and assisted in founding a punk rock group known as the Pussy Maggots. Music was never just a hobby to Virgil—it was a way of connecting with people. Even in recent years he continued writing and recording, often jotting lyrics and ideas on little scraps of paper wherever inspiration struck. Virgil also found great joy in helping others learn. Whether teaching a young musician new chords on the guitar or methods for strumming, Virgil loved seeing others discover their own passion for creativity.

Outside of music, Virgil loved spending time in the kitchen cooking and experimenting with new recipes. It was common for delicious smells to fill the house, always creating something new to share. Friends and family often heard his enthusiastic invitation, “Taste this!” as he proudly offered a sample of a new recipe or flavor combination. Cooking was another creative outlet for him, and when he wasn’t focused on music, he truly enjoyed working as a cook and sharing his passion for food with others.

Virgil is survived by his daughter, Raven Marie Hodge; by his mother, Carmen Lebron; his sister, Tania (Jim) Salling; and his nephews, Nicholas Salling, Mathew Salling, and Jacob Salling. Virgil also shared a special bond with his loyal dog, Lola, who was a constant companion.

Those who knew Virgil will remember his originality, his sense of humor, his love of music, and the way he encouraged others to create and express themselves. Whether through a song, a conversation, or a shared meal, Virgil had a way of leaving a piece of himself with people. His music, his stories, and the memories he created with family and friends will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
