William George Smith, known simply as "Bill" to all who knew him, passed away on September 22, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on July 22, 1939, in Detroit to George J. Smith and Anna (Budd) Smith.
Bill married Karen Sweitzer, and although their marriage eventually ended, they remained friendly and even did holidays together. They were proud of the family they built. He was especially proud of his loving daughters, Heather (Jim) Stewart and Heidi Smith who care deeply for their Dad. His sister, Barbara (Ray) Wild, also survives him.
He was especially proud to serve his country in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1961, which led to years of membership at the Taylor VFW. Following his service, Bill dedicated over 30 years to Detroit Edison, where he worked with heavy equipment.
Bill found community and friendship in many places. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, active with senior groups in Dearborn Heights, and met regularly with friends for morning coffee at McDonalds. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and working on his cars. He also liked to hunt—though as family and friends often joked, his success in that pursuit was limited.
At heart, Bill was known as a joker with a mischievous smile, always convinced he was a bit of a lady's man—even into his nursing home days. He greeted fellow residents and staff in the halls, making sure no one passed without a word.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 26, beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 6:00 p.m., at Solosy Funeral Home in Lincoln Park. Cremation will follow the service, and Bill will be laid to rest at a National Cemetery in Georgia.
His family and friends will remember him for his warmth, his quick wit, and his pride in the simple pleasures of life.
